You know you've heard them....
(or at least most of them)

(185 entries, updated July, 2020)

This is not a collection of quotations by famous philosophers or artists or historians. Instead, it is a collection of advertising taglines / slogans / catchphrases / jingles - those heavily repeated, pervasive (and invasive) phrases created by what used to be referred to as "Madison Avenue." Many of the modern ones you may recognize. Some of the older ones you may not. A couple of zingers are thrown in just for the heck of it.

I was tempted to include some slogans from a movie some years back where Dudley Moore drafts his fellow asylum inmates to come up with 'honest' advertising campaigns. The results are rather startling, but not without a certain logic.

While most of these are commercial taglines, others are slogans from political campaigns or other movements. Some of these phrases and their associated musical jingles have come and gone, others seem to have staying power, or at least generate enough sales to keep them in the media. Most recently - particularly in TV advertising - the catchphrase has become an endangered species - to be replaced by meaningless visual metaphors that usually have nothing whatsoever to do with the products (or people) they are trying to sell - they are just supposed to make you vaguely happy when you see their product. Kind of like Pavlov's bell. I'm told this is "lifestyle advertising."
